It took years of work and discussion, and switches, but construction on the new Tampa Museum of Art began today along Tampa’s waterfront. The plan is for a 120,000 sq. ft. facility adjacent to the Riverwalk and the current Poe Garage. In front will be the Curtis Hixon Park in a newly expanded and remodeled fashion. The East will be the future home of the Children’s Museum. The construction underway will only be for a 66,000 square foot building that will feature a 3,000 sq ft atrium, 3 story lobby and facilities to host 300 people events. The funds required for the additional almost 60,000 feet are still to be raised. The museum has been plagued with starts and stops over the past years. The controversy as to the size, extravagance, and location of the museum have been continually debated for 10 years. The previous museum building has been razed and the museum temporarily relocated to the city owned Centro Espanol building in Old West Tampa.
