Wheels of Success is a unique group with a unique leader. Tampa can be a very challenging place to try to work if you are transportation challenged. For most residents with an income of under $40,000, as much as 1/3 of their income can go to a car, insurance, gas, and the related costs. Without transportation, trying to work in Tampa can be an impossibility. Wheels works frequently with employers to assist their employees overcome their transportation problems. Frequently it seems the problems come from failed relationships. RACE Luncheon provided a glimpse into some of those that have been helped and a look at the future plans of the group. President Susan Jacobs is a passionate leader that lived the experience of dealing with an abusive relationship that left her having to struggle with the needs for transportation to break her life pattern. Susan deals with every problem of auto ownership for their accepted clients. They have put over 250 cars and drivers on the road during the past years. Their efforts have finally gotten the attention of some major backers including Caspers Company, owners of many Tampa Bay area MacDonald’s locations. Their assistance is usually in the form of a loan but can include insurance, auto repair, an actual auto, registration and more. They frequently provide classes on maintaining your car for their clients that need more information. They accept donations of autos, repairs, and more. Shelton Quarles, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player and now Chairman of the Tampa Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority, served as the Luncheon Chairman. 350 attended the event and those funds should put at least 12 more people behind the wheel. They do accept donated cars, but they just might sell it if it will bring enough money to put two or more people on the road. Susan has created a group that is frugal and very focused.
