The Weather Says NO to the Gasparilla Extravaganza
The annual event designed for kids ended early as a severe thunderstorm and tornado warning forced the main parade to end less than an hour into the event. The planned Piratechnics Fireworks were postponed to the next day. Several thousand parade participants and watchers scurried to get under shelter or away as the storm front moved in. We must compliment the decisionmakers that made the call. What a hard thing. The planning, the kids, the people, pretty disappointing. We compliment the efficiency of the law enforcement officers that communicated quickly to parade spectators exactly what was happening. BUT mostly we have to compliment the thousands of viewers that did not argue or grumble, but rather promptly gathered their things and headed out. Frankly we expected some harsh words and disparaging remarks, we did not hear any. The storm front moved through at almost one hour after the parade was cancelled. The roads will still crowded as paradegoers headed toward dry safety.
We, like everyone, was disappointed with the cancellation of the parade, but it was great to see our community respond in such a proper way.
