The Gasparilla Distance Classic brings runners from everywhere to participate in a series of 15k and 5k races on Saturday and a marathon and half marathon on Sunday. Saturday also features a wheelchair race that is no easy run. Thousands of experienced and amateur atheletes wandered through Tampa’s convention center to get the details of gear, foods, and running styles on Friday night before hitting the streets on Saturday morning. The Saturday event included an outdoor party featuring the JGLB band. This year’s event featured perfect weather that helped to provide a true spirit of excitement. A new title sponsor – Publix – provided plenty of nutritious drinks and foods for the participants. But that was far from all, an extensive array of displays, physical advice, and product giveaways had been assembled by the Gasparilla Distance Classic organizing team. With a spotlight on physical fitness, this event brings runners from across the country and with Tampa’s weather and waterfront location has become a yearly event for many participants. Held a week after the Gasparilla Pirate Invasion, it is always fun to watch the previous weeks partying participants put on their running shoes for a different Gasparilla experience.
